Pep Club
Students who want to support boys' and girls' basketball teams should join Pep Club. Members sit together and cheer at the games. They also have opportunities to work in the concession stand, make signs and posters to decorate the gym and hallways to promote school spirit.
Top Dog Student Incentive Program
W.J.H.S. will be incorporating a new reward program for our students this year. There are several components in the program. All are designed to recognize students who exhibit outstanding effort, character, and behavior in the classrooms and around the school building.
Bow WOW Bones are tickets that are handed out by teachers to students who exhibit a monthly character trait. There will be a monthly drawing for prizes for each grade level for students who have received a Bow WOW Bone. These character traits are Respect, Responsible, Tolerant, Generous, Self-Motivated, Perseverance, Patient, Trustworthy, Patriotic, and Loyal.
The Top Dog Student of the Month award is similar to last year’s “Most Wanted” program. Teachers will select students who exemplify the desired character trait of each month. There will be three Top Dog Students of the Month per grade level.
There will also be a grade level Awards Assembly after each quarter to recognize student achievements. These are tentatively scheduled for October 26, January 11, March 22, and May 24. Students will receive awards and recognition for honor roll, perfect attendance, sports participation, and other academic or extracurricular participation. Award certificates and prizes will be presented at these assemblies.
Student Council
WJHS Student Council consists of four offices, three committee chairpersons, and one student representative from each homeroom. Officers are elected in the spring and attend the IAJHSC Leadership Camp for one week. The committee chairpersons, elected after the officers, may attend camp as well. The council participates in the following areas: student services, student involvement, and community service. The council, a member of the Illinois Association of Junior High Student Councils, actively participates in the Advisor's Workshop, Southwest District Fall Workshop, State Wide Service Project, and the IAJHSC State Convention.
Yearbook
Staff members meet every week after school to prepare the annual WJHS yearbook. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who have at least a B average in language arts or a recommendation from a teacher may apply. The staff selects pictures, designs pages, interviews people, and writes copy for the yearbook .
Youth to Youth
This group uses education, peer support, and fun activities to help young people make good decisions and stay drug and alcohol-free. It also promotes service and leadership skills. Projects include planning Red Ribbon Week, organizing a food pantry collection, sponsoring contests and events at WJHS, and completing other service projects at school and in the community. This organization is open to WJHS students of all grade levels and meets every other week throughout the school year.
