About Pre-K

The Waterloo Pre-Kindergarten is a state-funded grant program for children who would benefit from attending a preschool before entering kindergarten, as identified through the Preschool Screening.  The curriculum is designed to meet the social, emotional intellectual and physical needs of each child.  The children will learn primarily through their play in a variety of learning centers.  The centers will include:  art, dramatic play, library, blocks, table toys, sand and water play, and others throughout the year.

Classes are held at the Zahnow Elementary School.  Morning session will be 8:00am to 10:45am.  Afternoon session  will be from 12:00pm to 2:45pm.  Both sessions meet Monday through Friday and follow the Waterloo School District calendar.

All students must have a physical exam and immunizations records must be up to date.  Please use the form provided by the school.  Parents must keep their child home for fever, skin rashes, vomiting/diarrhea, swelling/redness of throat, or other contagious diseases.  Children must be fever and symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.  Remember to call the school if your child will be absent.

Be sure your child comes to school rested and well-nourished.  Our snacks are nutritious, but not a full meal.  Please help your child to learn proper toilet habits, as well as to handle a tissue independently.

Many Pre-K children will ride the bus to or from school.  Please help your child get on the bus and meet the bus at the designated stop when your child comes home.  On the bus, the children must remain seated at all times.  Children must obey the driver's rules.  If you have any questions about bussing, call the bus garage at 939-8877.  Please call the bus garage if your child will not be riding the mini-bus any particular day.

Each child should have a book bag or backpack to bring to school every day.  Label all book bags, jackets, hats, etc. with your child's name.  A supply list will be provided.  Children should wear play clothes and comfortable shoes for playing on the playground.  Please listen to the weather forecast and dress your child appropriately for the weather.

If for some reason you or someone else will be picking your child up instead of riding the bus, you must send a note to the teacher.  We cannot take your child's word for it!!  If there is a last minute change, you may call, but a note is the preferred method of communication.
