Daily Schedule
Here's an idea of how our days usually go:
Arrival/Table Activity--Children are greeted and encouraged to remove coats, check their book bags and hang them up independently. After the childen arrive, we all say the Pledge of Allegiance together.
Small group--The children are assigned to an area of the classroom to work on a small group activity with 3 or 4 other children. Monday through Thursday they rotate between the four activities. On Friday, each child chooses a book from the classroom library to take home.
Circle Time--Group discusses the date and weather, checks a daily job chart and reviews the schedule for the day. Activities at circle time relate to a common theme (ie. fall, dinosaurs). Books, songs, games and fingerplays are shared. Children plan their activities for circle time.
Centers Time--Children carry out the activities they chose in the various interest centers. One or more of the activities will be teacher guided (ie. games, art projects) and others will be child initiated centers. Centers in the classroom include blocks, pretend play, art, sensory table, listening, table toys, writing, library and computer.
Snack--The morning class will be served a light breakfast soon after arrival, while the afternoon class will have a nutritious snack, later in the day. Both are served with chocolate or white milk. Social skills and manners are stressed, as well as good nutrition.
Movement--Weather permitting, the children will go to the playground, so dress accordingly!! If the weather is bad, songs and games will be planned to encourage body movement.
Story--Children will listen to and discuss a book related to the theme.
Dismissal--Children will talk about the day's activities and the plans for tomorrow. Independence will be encouraged in putting on coats and children will be walked to busses or cars to go home.
Our day goes by really quickly, and we don't always follow this schedule exactly, but we try our best to do all of the activities listed every day.
