Second grade students are given "well checkups" in reading three times each year through Response to Intervention.  In the fall, winter, and spring students are checked for fluency.  In the winter and spring comprehension is also checked.  Benchmarks are as follows:

 Fall Fluency          45 correct words per minute

 Winter Fluency      65 correct words per minute                Winter Comprehension        11 correct answers

 Spring Fluency      90 correct words  per minute               Spring Comprehension         15 correct answers

Reading support students are checked with the Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessment System twice each year. This assessment helps establish the instructional reading level of students.  Second grade students should enter second grade reading at level J (2.0) and move to level M (2.9) by the end of the school year.
