Support Your Child's Reading and Language Development
Encourage a Love for Reading!!
- Have your child read aloud to you
al least 5 or 10 minutes each day. Let your child read their favorite
books again and again, even if you think they have out grown them.
- Read aloud to your child 10 - 15 minutes each day. Listening to stories expands your child's vocabulary.
- Talk with your child about the
material you read to them. Have your child retell the story in their
own words to improve comprehension. Language and thinking develop when
there's a chance to talk about what was read.
- Ask your child questions that don't require a "right" answer.
- Model good reading for your child.
When your child sees you reading a newspaper, magazine, or book they
understand that reading is important.
- Help your child build a library of favorite books.
- Get a library card for your child.
- Talk about what you read before, during, and after reading.
- When your child makes a mistake in
reading, wait so that they have time to catch and correct. If needed,
skip the unknown word and keep reading to see if they can figure out
the word from the sentence meaning or help them sound out the word by
looking for parts they know.
