Educational Overview
Waterloo is a fast-growing school district emerging into a position of educational leadership in southern Illinois. Our educational programming spans grades pre-K through 12, and supports high-quality teaching and learning through meaningful, differentiated curriculum, and challenging learning experiences. Our district, through systems and forward thinking, has set the direction for future district achievement to include productive school community collaboration and expanded academic preparation for both higher education and meaningful contribution to our world. With the expected growth in Waterloo’s population, Waterloo Community Unit School District No. 5 is continually reviewing and monitoring:
- Fiscally responsibility
- Stewardship in the community
- Increases in student population

Facilities and Their Histories
Waterloo High School
Students attended Waterloo High School for the school year 1938-39 for the first time. The north high school complex is a two story facility constructed in 1937 on an eleven acre site shared with the now south high school complex. The high school and junior high students occupied the same building now known as the north and south complex until August, 1999.
Waterloo Junior High School
Waterloo Junior High School was erected in 1999 and the students attended this building for the first time during the 1999-2000 school year.
Rogers Elementary
Students attended Waterloo Middle School for the first time for the 1992-93 school year. This building is a single story facility constructed in 1992 on a thirty-eight acre site. Waterloo Middle School changed its name for the school year 1999-2000 to Rogers Elementary School. Rogers Elementary School also housed the central offices for District #5 until January, 2004, when increased enrollment at Rogers required the Central Offices to relocate to the former Morrison-Talbott Library.
Zahnow Elementary
Students first attended W. J. Zahnow Elementary School during the 1971-72 school year. This school is a single story facility constructed on a nine acre site north of the high school complex. Due to increased enrollment, a two-classroom mobile unit was added in the Summer of 2004 and a second unit in 2005. |
