Course Description: 

  • This course is designed for the student with emerging language and reading skills.  Students will enhance their knowledge and deepen their appreciation of writing and reading using The Six Traits of Writing and many differential-learning strategies.

 Curriculum Elements:

  • Analyzing text features, understanding visuals, recognizing text structures, reading in the content areas, reading beyond the classroom, vocabulary mini-lessons, and comprehension mini-lessons with graphic organizers.

 

  • Literature Used:  

    Night by Elie Wiesel,     

    Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper    

    Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson    

 

 Quarterly Requirements:

A book report will be due each quarter. 

  • Book needs to be approved with teacher

  • Must be a fiction chapter book

  • Can not be a book that has a recent movie

  • Form will be provided by teacher

 Extra Credit

  • Extra credit is always be available for students who inquire

 Make-Up Procedure:

  • Ask for homework when reporting a student absent.

 After-School Help Procedures:

  • I am always available for anyone who needs help during my prep time (2nd hour), before school (I can be there anytime) and after school (with advance notice, I will make myself available).

 Classroom Expectations:

  • Cooperation

  • Effort

  • Participation

  • Kindness

  • Work completion

 Classroom Discipline Plan:

  • Be in seat when bell rings

  • Talk only when request is granted after raising hand.

  • Bathroom breaks must be taken between classes.

  • Treat others with respect.

  • Finish assigned tasks before class period ends – unless it’s homework
