Summer is right around the corner. The Gardner Elementary office will be open
Monday-Thursday from 8am-3pm.

Thoughts from the 4th grade teachers in regard to summer learning:

To prevent summer slide it is a benefit to your child to read daily. They should be
reading something at or just above their reading level each day. The best way to
improve reading skills is to practice reading! Call it “STAR” time
(Stop Talking And Read), puts a more positive spin on it.:)
They can be using online games to practice math skills, especially multiplication and
division facts. They have sites that allow you to track their progress also. They may
like those better than worksheets or workbook pages.
(20 min. of educational time earns 20 min of fun time!)
Encourage your child to learn something NEW!! Mastering a new skill or a
challenging task often requires students to use or build upon ideas learned in school,
read instructions, and helps to strengthen new areas of the brain.
Ideas include learning to: ride a unicycle, play the ukulele, clean a bathroom
properly, sew/knit/crochet, build a birdhouse. . .
Also, please, allow your child some relaxation time for their emotional well-being,
outside time for their physical health, and charitable time for their spiritual growth.
Children feel so fulfilled when helping others. Well-rounded students are happy
students. We love for our students to come to school happy!

Fifth Grade:

The fifth grade classes recently enjoyed Conservation Day at the Sportsman's Club.
The activities tied in with our science unit on Human Impact to the Earth. In
addition, the band and chorus wrapped up their concert series with their final
assembly of the year.
The last few weeks of 5th grade will be busy and exciting! We will take a tour of the
Jr. High and register for classes. We have a lot to learn yet in our daily classes as
well. During whole group reading, we are finishing the year with units on inferring,
questioning, and a nonfiction novel. In science class, before and after the
Conservation Day field trip, classes are learning about Human Impacts on Earth. We
are exploring ecosystems, food webs, and factors that influence the growth of plants.
Students are finishing up their constitution unit during social studies class and
moving onto the three levels of government (national, state and local) and the
responsibilities of each. Then we are beginning an economics unit which includes
the topics of good/services, needs vs wants, resources, trade, supply and demand and
saving vs spending. In math, the students will continue working with decimals,
fractions, and measurement. Informative writing will be the final unit of the school
year in language. Students will be researching topics and writing reports using the
facts collected. We will end the school year with Gardner Getaway activities, a
dodgeball tournament, a demonstration on boomerangs, and a talent show.
