Return to In-Person Learning: A Letter From Mr. Charron
WCUSD#5
Wednesday, September 16, 2020

Families,

Waterloo CUSD #5 will resume in-person instruction later this month.  Attendance for K-5 elementary students will begin on September 24, 2020, with students attending Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.  WJHS and WHS students will begin on September 30, 2020. Grade 6-12 students will be assigned to groups A or B and will attend from approx. 7:45 a.m. - 12 p.m. (exact times TBD) on their assigned day.  Group A will attend Mondays and Wednesdays.  Group B will attend Tuesdays and Thursdays.  All students in grades 6-12 will have remote instruction on Fridays.  Full-time Remote Learning will continue to be an option for all students/families.

Wednesday, September 23, 2020, will be declared a Remote Learning Planning Day. All students will have this day off from educational activities while teachers use this day for final preparation for students returning to in-person learning and for those students that will continue learning remotely. *For those high school seniors scheduled to take the SAT test, testing will continue as scheduled on September 23rd.

The health of our students, staff, and community remains a top priority.  We have been working closely with the Monroe County Health Department in developing plans that can better address the educational needs of our students while maintaining safety.  This return to in-person phase of our Blended Remote Learning Plan will allow us to continue providing remote instruction and educational activities comparable to the curriculum that will be covered with in-person learning.  We feel this will be best for all students, especially considering multiple cases of quarantining are likely to occur throughout the school year.

WCUSD #5 will be adhering to Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines in regard to mask wearing and not exceeding 50 individuals in one space.  We will adhere as closely as possible to six feet of social distancing in classrooms.  Parents will be expected to certify daily that their children are not experiencing symptoms of fever over 100.4 F, new onset of moderate to severe headache, shortness of breath, new cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain from unknown cause, new congestion/runny nose, new loss of sense of taste or smell, nausea, fatigue from unknown cause, or muscle or body aches.  We will be using an app designed to make this exchange of information more efficient.  We will be adhering to guidance provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health with regard to sending students home and/or excluding them from attendance (return to remote instruction.)  Click here for the most current COVID-19 Interim Exclusion Guidance document, which is updated periodically.

Students who choose to attend in-person classes will be expected to follow Waterloo CUSD #5 attendance policies.  Students who choose to stay with the remote learning option may later elect to participate with in-person learning, but will need to coordinate this change with the office staff of each building.  After the initial start of in-person classes, any changes will be addressed on an individual basis in consideration of family circumstances and what is in the best interest of each student.

Please anticipate communication from your child's school in the coming days with surveys regarding attendance, schedules, technology needs, and additional information that is specific to each school.

We look forward to seeing students returning to our buildings and need everyone's cooperation in educating our students and keeping our community safe.

Sincerely,

Brian Charron

Superintendent
